About Asahiyama Zoo
Asahiyama Zoo is a reason to slow down in Hokkaido. On the eastern side of Asahikawa, its appeal lies in watching how animals move and behave, rather than hurrying from one species label to another. The hillside setting and northern climate make this a visit to plan for the season you are actually travelling in.
The zoo's penguin, seal and polar bear facilities are part of a broader collection designed to make animal observation engaging. Allow the habitats to set some of the pace: an animal that is quiet when you arrive may reward another look later. Seasonal activities are a bonus to check with the operator, not something to assume every zoo visit includes.

Planning your visit
Choose the day's priorities from the current zoo map and programme, then check the operating calendar for your travel dates. Allow for slopes, weather and regular breaks, especially with children or a mobility aid. Plan the return transport before setting off from central Asahikawa. Give observation time a place in the itinerary alongside meals and any presentations, rather than treating the grounds as a checklist to finish.
