Destination guide
The western-coast context for Singapore’s attractions includes a cultural garden whose history predates the resort-park era.
The story behind the day out
Haw Par Villa was built in 1937 along Pasir Panjang Road. Created by Aw Boon Haw, it used sculptural scenes to present Chinese cultural and moral stories in an outdoor setting. This makes it a historical anchor for the west-coast area. Sentosa’s later resort attractions belong to a separate island destination and should not be treated as evidence that every Singapore park is part of the west.
