Parks, big days out, and places worth exploring.

Destination guide

Tennessee

Tennessee’s park history includes a destination that changed identity while retaining a connection with its original site.

The story behind the day out

A railway attraction becomes Dollywood

Dollywood’s operator traces the property’s roots to Rebel Railroad in 1961. The Dollywood name arrived in 1986, adding Dolly Parton’s identity and connection with the Smoky Mountains to an existing attraction. The two dates mark different stages rather than competing founding claims. The story explains how a relatively small railway-based visitor experience could develop into a much broader entertainment destination.
