The story behind the day out
A toy becomes a place to visit
LEGOLAND welcomed its first guests in Billund in summer 1968. An associated hotel also opened that summer, initially under the Esso Motor Hotel Billund name; LEGO bought it in 1974. The operator’s hotel history therefore reveals an overnight-travel story alongside the park’s beginning. Billund’s destination developed through both the attraction itself and the accommodation that allowed visitors to stay nearby.
